TMJ Treatment
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull.
It is located beside both ears, and jaw movement is carried out by the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
TMJ disorders refer to conditions in which the muscles, cartilage, joints, or discs around the jaw are damaged, causing discomfort, pain, and difficulty with jaw movement.
Q. What is the process of TMJ treatment?
1. Detailed consultation and TMJ X-ray examination
We begin with a detailed consultation about the patient’s symptoms, medical history, stress level, and behavioral habits, such as clenching or grinding the teeth during sleep.
Additional imaging tests are then performed to first identify any structural problems in the joint.
If necessary, further examinations such as bite analysis and electromyography (EMG) may also be carried out.
2. Temporomandibular Disorder Analysis
We assess pain and movement limitations by examining the muscles and soft tissues around the jaw joint.
- Degree of mouth opening, direction of movement when opening the mouth, range of forward/backward and side-to-side movement, and the presence of pain
- Palpation of the TMJ area and evaluation of joint sounds
- Examination of the temporalis, masseter, sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, lateral pterygoid, and medial pterygoid muscles
- Bite analysis
3. Appropriate treatment based on the examination results
Based on an accurate diagnosis of the TMJ disorder, we provide treatment aimed at improving symptoms and preventing recurrence.
- Appliance therapy (occlusal stabilization splint / jaw Botox injection)
- Physical therapy (TENS, laser, infrared therapy, spray-and-stretch, manual therapy)
- Medication therapy
